The Cobalt Knights were a group of administrators organized by CC Corp as a 'debug' team back in The World R:1, who's job was to hunt down and destroy any rogue data, vagrant AIs, or anything that was not naturally part of The World. They were disbanded due to some technicalities during R:1 with their true identity revealed to the public, and though for a short period of time they had reformed after this, the fire that destroyed most of the data from The World R:1 caused much of the information necessary for the Cobalt Knights, and so for a second time they were disbanded, hence their lack of involvement during The World R:2 and R:3.
With many of the things brought around in The World R:4, the revival of the Cobalt Knights was one of them, but this time they work in public view as a means of ensuring the peace and security among the players. They're much more like a police force now than before, though they don't really deal with things such as PKs. PKing is a choice of the players and unless it becomes a major problem, the Cobalt Knights will not get involved. The Cobalt Knights still have the top priority of eliminating corrupted, unnatural data in The World to ensure it's continued functionality.
However, CC Corp has done a few things differently with the Knights this time beyond their public existence. For one, they have learned to modify the data of the Divine Spear of Wotan, something they were only able to do due to a fragmented remain of the data left over from R:1 buried in the data from R:2. It contained the data relating to it's function of deleting data, but it lacked the data that governed it's form. By filling in this gap with pre-existing weapon data, they were able to create a version of the Divine Spear of Wotan in every weapon form, widening the permitted classes allowed for a Cobalt Knight. Second, they added a function to where equipping the Divine Spear of Wotan temporarily alters the avatar of the character into the uniform of the Cobalt Knights, allowing Cobalt Knights to have a regular character and still be able to perform their duty when needed.
The third, and probably the biggest change, is that should players prove to love The World enough and become noticed by CC Corp, there is a chance they may become part of the Cobalt Knights. This does not require working for them outside of the game, but it comes with the offer, as well as the benefits of being a member of the Cobalt Knights in the game. However, the criteria for becoming a Cobalt Knight are unknown, so only those who are approached will know if they qualify or not to become a Cobalt Knight. [/size]
