So, there are two different styles of combat on .hack//CATHARSIS, and each of them serves their own purpose. People will choose which style they wish to used based on how they want to play, so technically nobody is forced into a given style of combat if they don't want to use it.
The first style is casual style, which is just roleplaying the fight out normally. Casual style is for those who aren't concerned with levels, HP, or SP, and simply want to enjoy themselves. It doesn't involve any of the technical aspects, and is purely something people do for fun rather than profit. Skills and spells can still be used, but there will not be an SP gauge to govern how much you can use them. Casual style is used for non combat oriented events, normal roleplaying between members, and anything that doesn't yield exp or gold.
The second style is what we call 'LS Style', developed by two brave men known as Rwaht and Ciaran. It is the style that is used in combat events, quests, combat events, arena matches, and anything along those sorts. It is used to govern times when there is something to gain/lose, so that it's fair for everyone and nobody can be accused of 'cheating'. LS Style uses your HP and SP to judge your status, and it has a system known as 'Action slots'. Action slots are a means to keep someone from doing too much in a turn. A player gets 2 action slots per turn, unless they gain extra ones due to their class. There are five general kinds of actions:
- Attack: This is a regular attack, when you simply hit an enemy and do not use a skill or spell. This does damage based on your class, and costs no SP to use.
- Move: There are two zones in LS Style to determine range - In range and Out of Range. In range is where melee attacks are able to be used, while Out of Range is only ranged attacks will be able to hit. You use a move action to move into either of these zones.
- Skill/Spell: Using a skill or spell takes an action slot and costs some number of SP based on the skill or spell used. Normally, a character could only use one skill and one spell in a round (if they used both their normal slots for the round for this purpose), but some classes can disregard this (such as Wave Masters).
- Guard: Blocking an attack, this will reduce the damage from an attack by some amount based on your class and the type of attack aimed at you. This costs no SP to use. This can only be done once per round normally, unless a class has the ability to do otherwise.
- Dodge: Moving out of the way of an attack, this will allow you to avoid an attack. This costs no SP to use. This can only be done once per round normally, unless a class has the ability to do otherwise. Accuracy buffs and evasion debuffs negate the ability to dodge, while improved Agility allows you to dodge against improved accuracy.
Some classes have special actions, such as an Adept Rogue's weapon switch, or a Werewolf's shifting. These are addressed in their class description.
NOTE ABOUT DODGING AND GUARDING: These are retrospective actions, meaning that you can only use them after an attack, skill, or spell has been used against you. In a quest, a GM will describe an attack against the player as if it had connected, HOWEVER, should the target of the attack block or dodge, the attack will be altered accordingly and the target's HP will be affected according to their response to the attack. This means that if an attack would normally reduce you to 0, but you can block to reduce the damage to non-lethal levels, then you will still be alive despite what was initially in the GM's post.
SP Regen: 4 SP is regained in a post for all Classes, including Adept Rogues. Say you use a skill that costs 10 SP, and you have 20 SP total. You have 10 left after casting, and in your next post, you gain four, giving you 14. In the next post after that, you'd have 18 and so on. For every five levels, 2 SP more get tacked on. A level 1 gains 4 per post, a level 6 gains 6, a level 11 gains 8 per post, etc. Wavemasters, Harvest Clerics, Shadow Warlocks, and Macabre Dancers gain 6 SP per post and increase by 4 more every five levels. Adept Rogues with Wavemaster regain 5 SP per post and increase by 3 every five levels.
SP Regen happens at the end of the round, so if you lack the SP to use a skill/spell at the beginning of your turn, you must wait until next round to use it after your SP has been regained. [/size]
